A good knit can be handed down more than once if it is looked after. These simple habits keep sweaters and jumpers soft, bright and in shape, wash after wash.
Wash less, and wash gently
- Air knits between wears. They rarely need washing after a single outing.
- Turn each piece inside out and use a cold, gentle cycle or wash by hand.
- Choose a mild detergent and skip the bleach, which fades pastel colours.
- Always follow the care label on the garment first.
Dry flat, never hang
Wet knits stretch under their own weight. Press out the water with a towel, reshape the sweater and lay it flat in the shade to dry. Keep it out of the tumble dryer.
Deal with pilling early
Small bobbles are normal where sleeves rub against the body. Remove them with a fabric comb while they are still small, and wash knits inside out to slow them down.
Fold to store
Hangers leave bumps in the shoulders, so fold knits and keep them in a drawer or on a shelf. Before packing them away for a long time, make sure they are clean and completely dry.
